| Maintaining Your Work Station 2/23/00 bf |
There are several important work station rules to follow so that your pc runs at peak efficiency. 1. If you have a carpeted floor, do not put your PC on the carpet. It accumulates dust in the laser components on the Cd Drive, the internal fans, the motherboard and the floppy drive. This ends up causing the equipment to fail prematurely. 2. Please do not put anything next to the intake or exhaust ports on your PC as it will overheat. 3. Please do not put paper on top of your pc. Please do not cover up your pc 4. Occasionally, during lunch break or at the end of the day run the following programs. 1. Run Disk Cleanup if you have a Windows 98 Machine, ( this will take about 30 seconds ) start / programs/ accessories / system tools / disk cleanup/ The drive you will want to run this on is always drive c. If it says anything different call me. 2. Run Disk Defragmenter ,( this may take 15 minutes or an hour or more ) start / programs/ accessories / system tools / disk defragmenter again this will be drive C. Special Considerations for # 4 above 1a. With Disk Cleanup , you have the option of checking several boxes that appear on the screen. I have no problem with you checking any and all of those boxes each time. 1b With Disk Cleanup, if you have a windows 95 work station instead of windows 98, you will need to manually do the cleanup. Please discuss with Bruce and he will walk you through the process. Special Considertions concerning Copying and Scanning at your Desk with Visioneer paperport scanners or HP1100 printer scanner combinations. Each time you make a copy, you are actually scanning a document. Temporary files are written to your computer and gradually the hard drive becomes fragmented. You need to run Step 4 above, items 1 and items 2 - the more often you scan. Visioneer Paperport Systems or Problems If your scanner does part of a page and stops, or goes fast and then slow and then fast again then here are the issues that cause this. If you have 3 or 4 customer files open in Tam, + Outlook + Yahoo + Word -- you should feel fortunate that your scanner functions when you put a page through it -- because now the scanner software activates and requires more resources. If you have not run the defragmenter or the disk cleanup utility - at least on a bi monthly basis, then your scanner may stop or slow way down. If your visioneer paperport ever stops with the light on, please unplug it immediately. Also, when it stops, you may have to grab the paper and pull it out. You may occasionally have to calibrate your scanner. If you forget how, contact your local support person, or Cheryl or myself. You can do this with a plain piece of white paper. If you click the scanner icon (top left in visioneer) and then click scanner setup and calibrate you then will have it down. Calibrate with an HP1100 is under the tools tab. Verifying that your Computer is protected Against Virus. Remember to check your virus software Start / Programs/ Norton Anti Virus / Norton Anti Virus -- Program opens and in Middle of page it shows using virus definitions dated XX/XX/XXXX Make sure the date is no older than 1 month, othewise check box at the top called live update. Click the Log Icon at top and make certain that your virus software has scanned Drive C atleast once in the past 2 weeks, otherwise check box C and click Scan now. |
